We often head to Lough Dan for a great hike in, dip in the lake’s water’s and to relax with the thermos and a hot cuppa on the beautiful shore of Serein Coon Beach.
A Natural Haven
Lough Dan is a ribbon lake located in the Wicklow Mountains, fed by the Cloghoge River and nestled between the peaks of Knocknacloghoge and Luggala. Its crystal-clear waters and unspoiled surroundings make it a haven for wildlife and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Lough Dan has limited public access, it was closed during Covid era due to bad behaviour from some campers so please always respect the area and clean up after yourselves leaving no trace, bring everything back with you. Camping is prohibited.
Activities at Lough Dan
1. Wild Swimming
Lough Dan’s clean and refreshing waters are perfect for wild swimming. The lake’s remote location means you can often enjoy a quiet swim with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and forests. The water is cool and invigorating, providing a perfect natural escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Tips: Always swim with a buddy and be cautious of changing weather conditions. The lake’s edges can be rocky, so water shoes are recommended. The water in lakes can also be very cold, so be well prepared if you do decide to swim here.

The area around Lough Dan offers some of the best hiking and walking trails in Wicklow. From gentle strolls along the lakeshore to challenging hikes up the surrounding peaks, there’s something for everyone.
Our Route In:
Heading from Roundwood towards Lough Dan Scout Centre and park opposite the Lough Dan Scout Centre and follow the road up to a farm. Slightly further up is an access track to Kanturk mountain in your right which takes through forest, follow the path and once you pass the forest you will start to see the Lough Dan below, continue your way until you reach a gate, if open you can pass through and cross the field towards the river leading to the lake. You will find the track beside the river leading towards the lake with a blue sign before coming into the beach. The path can be quite boggy in areas if recent rain so hiking boots may be needed. If the gate into the field is locked then please do not go onto the land as this is private property. It’s a easy to moderate hike lasting approx 40 - 60 minutes , perfect for those looking to explore the area’s natural beauty.
There are a number of different routes to Lough Dan but this is the only route we have taken.
3. Kayaking and Canoeing
The calm waters of Lough Dan are ideal for kayaking and canoeing. Paddling on the lake allows you to explore its hidden coves and admire the stunning scenery from a different perspective.

Getting to Lough Dan
Lough Dan is accessible via a scenic drive through the Wicklow Mountains. The nearest village is Roundwood, which is about 6 kilometers away. From there, follow the signs to Lough Dan Scout Centre, where you can park and begin your adventure.
Public Transport: While there is no direct public transport to Lough Dan, you can take a bus to Roundwood and then hire a taxi for the short drive to the lake.
